Salvation Mountain

After spending a few hours taking pictures in Bombay Beach we made our way to Niland, a similar eclectic desert town less than an hour away.  What we really wanted to see was Leonard Knight's Salvation Mountain.  Made of clay, hay and donated paint, it took the army veteran 30 years to build it.  Living alone in the middle of the desert, he worked on the art piece as a gift to God. He died in 2014 at the age of 82 and now volunteers continue expanding and maintaining it.  Behind the mountain is a squatter-village called Slab City.
